CHALLENGE ~ Try 13 New Recipes During Summer ’13

Anyone up for a challenge this summer???

Summertime typically is a bit more laid back, at least around here! Bedtime gets pushed back, kids usually roll out of bed around 9 am. Our afternoons are free-flowing and usually involve a lounging around with a good book, the pool and swimming lessons or dollar theater movie, all laid-back “beat the heat” activities. I find that it’s also a time where I have more freedom and a looser schedule for getting dinner on the table. That freedom also allows for a little more time and experimentation in the kitchen.

So here’s my challenge for you: Take advantage of the carefree summer afternoons and evenings to try 13 new recipes. That averages out to be 1 new recipe per week, until school kicks back into session. And once school is back, you’ll have 13 more recipes in your “busy weeknight meal arsenal.” Yahoo!

Tips to make this challenge a success:

  • Sit down with the family and make your list of 13 recipes. Together. 
  • Stay organized with a “Try 13 Challenge” Pinterest board. Or if you’d like to join my Try 13 Challenge board and pin recipes to it, please email me and tell me your Pinterest email address, and I’ll invite you to the board once I get it up and running, and you can share your recipes too.  
  • Meal plan. Once you’ve got your list posted on the fridge, plan to make 1 meal per week, ideally based on what’s on sale at the grocery store! :) 

Being a food blogger, I’m always mixing and matching and trying new combinations of ingredients and cooking methods. But even still, we have our handful of favorites…and I’m looking forward to finding some new recipes for my “no-thought dinners” list. Now, let’s work together to get out of the dinner time rut!

Each week I’ll be sharing a new recipe that we’ve tried and letting you know how we all liked it! And I look forward to hearing how your new recipe experiments go this summer too!

    Sounds like a great idea! Its so easy just to do take out when it is hot but one new recipe a week shouldn’t be too hard to do !! Especially with so many veggies and fruits nice and ripe this time of year !

    I would love to see some simple but really good recipes that didnt involve using the oven (since mine is currently not working) and really more raw foods that dont require cooking but are healthy, its so hot here even at dinner time its 542 and 101 right now. would love to join this challenge tho

    I think I’ll take this challenge, and take it one step further with each kid taking over a portion of the recipe finding/making department–as long as they use something from the weekly CSA farm share, that is 😉 .

    This is an awesome Idea! I actually had decided to try about 1 new one a week (I recently started working full time so I sometimes slack) But I have so far been doing a good job… and making it a challenge is even better. I’m really looking forward to it, I really need to expand my cooking skills. Don’t get me wrong I’m not a bad cook I just need more variety I’m getting burnt out on some of our favorites, if you know what I mean. I can’t wait to see the results of this challenge… and I’m looking forward to following the pinterest board!

    I currently have 2 separate boards for the try 13. One for the potential recipes to try and I just created one to keep track of the ones I have tried with how they went:) this really is a very good idea and has kept me very motivated to try recipes!
