Why I love One-Skillet Meals

When it comes to quick and satisfying one-dish dinners, skillet meals are my go-to, especially with a trusty 12″ deep skillet that perfectly caters to our family’s appetite, often leaving us with delicious leftovers.

Crafting a complete meal in a skillet calls for a blend of protein, veggies, and either pasta or rice. While I have a surplus of pasta in my pantry, I typically opt for pasta over rice, as the latter tends to require more time, especially when I’m craving a swift skillet dinner fix.

How to Cook One-Skillet Pasta Dinners

The process for most skillet dinners follows a familiar pattern: brown the meat or chicken, toss in some veggies and pasta, then introduce the liquid and pasta noodles. However, the proportions of pasta and liquid can vary significantly across recipes.

Determining the right amount of liquid hinges on several factors, including the type of pasta, existing liquid from sweating veggies, evaporation during cooking, and the size of the skillet or saucepan. Here’s my approach for achieving the perfect consistency with quick-cooking, regular, and whole wheat pastas:

  • Begin with 2 cups of liquid for every 12 oz. of pasta.
  • As the mixture simmers, gauge the liquid level—aim for enough to submerge most of the noodles.
  • Cover the skillet tightly and cook for 8to 10 minutes, allowing the noodles to absorb the liquid. I recommend gently stirring the contents once or twice during cooking, being mindful not to let too much steam escape.

Should you accidentally add too much liquid, simply uncover the skillet and let the excess water evaporate. Conversely, if you find yourself short on liquid, gradually incorporate hot water from the tap, about 1/4 cup at a time.

Mastering the art of skillet dinners is all about finding the right balance of ingredients and liquids. I hope these tips offer clarity and confidence for your next pasta skillet adventure, ensuring a perfectly cooked and utterly delicious meal!
