“It keeps the beans from being unruly!”

by Erin, The $5 Dinner Mom on May 25, 2009

A few photos from our weekend!

On Saturday night, we BBQed at a friends house…burgers, 7-layer salad and MUCH more!

7-Layer Salad made by my friend with lettuce, green onions, cheese, bacon, tomatoes, cucumbers and dressing.  Scrumptious!

My strawberry rhubarb pie plus my brand new gardening expert friend (who should expect LOTS of emails from me about this and that ;) brought a Rhubarb Pudding Cake (recipe here).  You would NEVER have known there was anything that was originally tart or bitter in the cake!  Heavenly!

See that RAMEKIN!  A gorgeous ramekin sitting on Chinet.  It struck me funny…so I asked our host and grilling extraordinarie why in the world his beans were in ramekin.  His response, “It keeps the beans from being unruly!”…meaning it keeps the bean juices off the buns and other food.  Who would’ve thought!  A genius idea, really?  Although, I’m not sure about a ramekin on Chinet!??!!??!  Perhaps some of those plates with dividers next time?!?

I get VERY little drama (girl drama, that is!) in my life with 2 toddler boys, so watching the girls was a delight for me!  Hmmm…wonder what they are up to…

Summer means two things…rosy cheeks and sweaty curlz!

Bubby is not so sure about this new slide!

And Cheeks is ALL for watering the “plants” like his mommy does!

And then there’s keeping the lawn mower spotless.

Plus an outdoor shower.  By the child who SCREAMS when the tub shower accidentally comes on?!?

And Memorial Day wouldn’t be complete without grilled corn (more on that later!)…Yes, it is SO not fair that boys get the great eyelashes!

Today the boys are off to the Reds baseball game in Cincy while I stay home to work on the cookbook manuscript!

I hope you all had a wonderful holiday and start to a fun filled summer!!!  A special thanks to all those who serve in the armed forces and those families who have lost a loved one in the line of duty!  We are DEEPLY grateful for the sacrifices you make for our freedom!

Great pictures! If Cincy is having anything like the weather we’re having in Lexington today, baseball game will be wet. I’m looking forward to hearing how you grill corn. I read about that on another blog. I haven’t ever tried it, but I’m tempted to.

Absolutely adorable kids! Life isn’t totally unfair, though- my daughter has eyelashes to rival those. Of course, I’d be happier if I had them:) And my oldest does the same thing with water- if she’s playing in the sprinkler or dumping water over her own head, it’s fine, but when it come bath time she screams!

Looks mighty yummy. Thanks for sharing. Today we are having Sliders ($3.00), Whole wheat slider buns ($2.00), BBQ onions ($.02), Grandmas delicious macaroni salad recipe ($.80), corn on the cob ($.80) & baked beans ($.50). $7.30 for a family of 5 adults. Not too bad. I’ll have to pull out my ramekins as I, too, do not want unruly beans. What a great idea. I will be putting them on Chinet as well since I got the Chinet for free last week..I might as well use them. Happy memorial day. Love your site…good luck with the book. I’ll be waiting in line for it :)

What fun! I really enjoyed the article and the adorable pictures. I totally understand about the beans :) I have to admit, I’ve never used a ramekin though :) :) :)

Those pictures are too cute! Thanks for sharing your day with us. I would have never thought of using a dish for the beans, that is smart if you don’t have the divided plates like you said!

Ugh, I hate when bean juices touch other things! I like the ramekin idea!

All of your pictures are lovely. I think this is the first time I’ve seen any of your boys, they’re precious!

That is an adorable picture of the girls! and I guess I’m the only one who had never heard of a ramekin. Learn something new every day. I love the things, too; I guess I’ll stop calling them “little dishes” or “the small white bowls”;) And see! John isn’t the only one who doesn’t like his food touching!

Just found your blog – I love it! The recipes all sound so good, I can’t wait to try them. And these pics are fantastic. I agree with Amanda – I’ll take my beans in a ramekin, please! :D

As to Bubby screaming if the shower comes on, might I suggest trying either a different shower head or a different setting if you have a multi-setting shower head? I, too, had sensory issues as a child (still do to a much lesser extent, many years later), and our shower was very painful to me. It felt like hundreds of needles sticking me, and yet tickled at the same time. It’s very hard to explain, but I just couldn’t take it. I absolutely refused to take a shower instead of a bath. But when we got a new shower head (when I was around 10 or so), it was a totally different sensation, and it didn’t take long for me to *love* showers!

If I were Smith I would go for it. Its time the teams start treating their players a little respect. Smith has proven to be a decent quarterback. Peyton will get hit hard and some team is going to be left with a hurt superstar.
