January Monthly Menu Plan

by Erin, The $5 Dinner Mom on January 2, 2009

I love “new beginnings”…each new year brings as we start a new year, each new month, for me, means writing a new menu plan and thinking up new and creative ways to make $5 meals. Each week brings a more detailed meal plan. And with each day, “For His compassions never fail. They are new every morning!” (Lamentations 3:22-23)

Here is my plan for the month of January. Notice “Soup Week”…I’ll be making a few of my favorites, as well as trying out a few new recipes!

In looking at this plan, I’m not sure my crockpot’s gonna make it through this month! I got a new one of these for Christmas, so my counter’s might be a little crowded this month!!! I am very much looking forward to “expedited baking”…since I’m making all the boys snacks now :)

5- Dominican Rice and Beans
6- Lemon Chicken on Pasta
7- Twice Baked Potatoes and Green Beans
8- Sweet n Sour Pork on Rice
9- Chicken Dijon on Potatoes
10 – BBQ Beef and Pasta
11- Potluck : Dessert

12- Potato Veggie Medley
13- Beef Goulash
14- Pork Roast
15- Rosemary Orange Chicken
16- Garbanzo Beans and Winter Vegetables
17- Turkey with Cornbread Stuffing
18- Pulled Pork with Corn Pudding

“Soup Week”
19- Turkey and Wild Rice Soup
20- Tortellini Soup (Thanks to The Meal Planner!)
21- Vegetable Bean Soup
22- Looking for another idea…got one…email me :)
23- Hearty Beef Stew
24- White Bean and Ham Soup (Thanks Emily for the idea!)
25- Turkey Chowder

26- Sweet n Sour Beef Roast
27- Fish
28- “Cheater” Chicken Divan
29- Crockpot Steak and Potatoes
30- Stuffed Peppers (If peppers are on sale??!!)
31- Beef and Asparagus Stirfry
1 – Lentils

I will post the recipe each night…stay tuned!

expedited baking?? I googled it, and only came up with your post, plus lots of sites selling stuff for baking & offering expedited shipping.

What is expedited baking? Thanks

Hi

I just found your site recently and I’m enjoying it ! Thank you for all the ideas.

I was trying to make use of your monthly meal planner but I can’t figure out how to save the template to my own google acct or even my save to my desktop.

I don’t want to the wrong thing and take something that was intended as an example and not for our use. If it is ok for us to save a copy could you help out the newbie with the “HOW” part ?

Thanks again,
bonnie

I’m so glad I found your blog – sounds like something I will really love – since I really love my crockpot – especially during the winter.

Oh and your Christmas Gift – the KitchenAide – you will LOVE It. I have a small kitchen with limited space – but this is one thing that is permanently IN the kitchen. If for nothing else – pizza dough / bread dough is made so much easier with this.

Soup idea: potato soup! Recipes abound online. One of my favorites is a double-potato soup that has russett and sweet potatoes in it. I also like a basic potato soup that I can sprinkle with cheddar cheese and crumbled bacon.

Congrats on winning the Walmart groceries! Great video.

I also had to comment because I just modified a recipe so much last week that the friends we had over named it Cheater’s Shepherd’s Pie. After I told them about all the vegetables that were in it they both wanted a second helping since it was so healthy!

I forgot to say that it was you “Cheaters” Chicken Divan that made me think of the shepherd’s pie–in case you didn’t get that connection. =)

When I was reading your entry asking for another soup idea, my first thought was Potato soup, but it looks like I’m not the first to come up with that idea! Potatoes are pretty inexpensive, and you can tailor it to your specific tastes (cheese, bacon, onions, etc.).

Love your blog, and congrats on winning the WalMart gift card! I heard your story on the radio last night and on TV this morning – you’re REALLY becoming a local celebrity! :-)

Don’t worry about your crock pots, they will be fine! I often have 2 or more going at the same time, as well as two or more bread machines!

I came across your Blog through Homespun Heart and I’m really enjoying it – thanks! My idea for your missing soup night is Cheeseburger Soup. I have NO idea if you can make it for $5, but I challenge you to give it a try! If you’d like it, let me know and I’ll email it to you. aussietasker @ gmail . com

Here’s a soup I’ve made a few times that I LOVE. Good with sweet potatoes added to it as well. Tuscan White Bean, Kale and Sausage soup. Subsitute spinach if you don’t like kale, but I think it’s perfect for soups.
