Ingredients
2 T butter
2 T flour (Use rice flour to keep it gluten free)
1-2 cups milk (whole or 2% is best!)
Directions
1. In saucepan, melt butter.
2. Once melted, add flour and whisk with butter.
3. Add milk to butter/flour mix and WHISK, WHISK, WHISK!
4. Cook on medium-high heat for 5-6 minutes. Stir often. Sauce will thicken.
5. If sauce is too thin, whisk in more flour.
6. If sauce is too thick, whisk in more milk.
7. Add chopped mushrooms for “cream of mushroom”. Add 3-4 T chicken stock for “cream of chicken”. Etc.
Cost $.50
This sauce is not only more cost effective, it is healthier, as it doesn’t contain the soy, preservatives and additives.

Yay! I definately had a need for this type of recipe. I look forward to using this soon. Does this freeze at all?
Thank you for all you do to help us save money too!
When condensed soups went on sale for a dollar a can, I was tempted to stock up on cream of mushroom but told myself to wait because I may be able to find it cheaper online. $5 dinners has been one of my bookmarks for a while now and I just stumbled across this recipe. Thank you for this cheaper alternative for casserole nights. I really appreciate it.
Thank you so much for this recipe. I have been wanting a homemade sauce that doesn’t have a funny taste like the store bought ones. I will have to try it soon!
This white sauce sounds fab!
I am new to home cooking and was wondering what other uses the white sauce would have. But I like this idea better than buying condensed soup for my cream of mushroom containing recipes.
