Well, “Soup Week” is coming to a close. I’ve got lots of soup in the freezer. In individual size portions for future lunches. We have been eating leftovers for lunch, but there was still plenty for the freezer.

But what do you eat with soup? I think that certain soups could be eaten on their own. But others have definite “compliments” to them. As with any healthy meal, try to add variety of colors, flavors and textures!

Chili – Cornbread and Green Beans

Chicken Tortilla Soup, Mexican Bean Soup, Rice and Bean Soup – Sweet Corn Cobs and Green Chili Cornbread or Spanish Rice (add a can of 4 oz green chiles to your favorite cornbread recipe)

French Onion Soup – French Roll with Asparagus

Beef Stew – Corn or Buttery Bread Machine Rolls

Chicken Based Soup like Zucchini Stew – Sweet Potato

Pasta Based Soup such as Minestrone or Pasta Fagioli – Broccoli, Asparagus or Side Salad

Potato-less Soup like Green Pepper Soup – Baked Potato or Baked Sweet Potato

For a vegetable soup like Butternut Squash Soup, Sweet Potato and Apple Soup or Mango Avocado Soup – Baked Chicken and Dinner Roll

When all else fails, think “Soup, Salad and Breadsticks”…

What are your favorite soups and sides???

You’re so good. I never serve anything but salad and bread with soup. I need to work on that. BTW… I made your pasta fagioli the other night… FABULOUS. That recipe is going in the family faves file!

I have been lurking for a while, but I wanted to de-lurk and say that I love this post! Thanks for sharing these ideas.

I always struggle with what to serve with soup, which is a reason that I don’t serve them as a meal very often even though I love them. I shall have to use these ideas.

I call leftovers “planovers” …actually I even toss in an extra chop or chicken or whatever in order to have enough left to make up small meals for lunches that go to the office and are microwaved. The freezer is stacked with marked containers .. they are also great on days I don’t feel like cooking…

We love any home made soup with a chunk of any home made bread, toasted… it’s usually plenty as most of my soups are …. erm….. hearty….. more like a stew….so then, it becomes spoon or fork? No wonder somebody invented the spork…

maybe I’ll try adding a little salad or something one day…..

Personally I love crusty bread or grilled cheese with soup! I think I can eat just about any kind of soup if I have bread! I am such a carb junkie!

Those are great ideas! I like making soup but often that’s all we’ll have for the whole meal; it’s good to have these ideas for things to serve along with the soup.

when I make tomato soup, I make a grilled cheese and cut it into 1/2-inch pieces (little cubes) and use them as *croutons* on top.

Hi, thought I’d add a short comment about soups. I’ve had a goal for some time to have a SSSSH meal once a month. (That’s my acronym for Soup & Sandwich Saturday Supper Here 🙂 I will make two different soups in my crockpots, but ask my guests to bring their choice of sandwiches or at least, the fixings. I hope it will be a fun & easy potluck for us all. I’m presently in the process of moving to a new home nearer my family, but as soon as I’m settled, the invites go out. I’m glad to see so many soup recipes on your website. Thanks.
