Information for New Readers

by Erin, The $5 Dinner Mom on April 21, 2009

Welcome to $5 Dinners!  I’m so glad you’re here!

Below is information that you’ll find helpful in getting acquainted with the site and learning about how things work around here!

Each week I write a menu plan.  (Just a plan…helps keep me from picking up the phone and ordering take out!)  During the week I will post the recipes with a cost breakdown of the meals that we eat each night.  Mixed in with the recipes, I share money saving tips, “how to” tutorials, run down of each week’s grocery store purchases, and other information you need to know!

As for coupons, I use coupons from the newspaper, printable coupons, and electronic coupons (also discussed here). Each month, I remind everyone about the new coupons that are available.

Coupons not your thing?  Learn more about how to save money by shopping each week’s sale items, head on over and check out the Bargain Meal of the Week feature.  Each week contributors from all over the US post recipes based on what’s on sale at their grocery stores!  Planning a bargain meal each week is a surefire way to keep a few extra dollars in your pocket!

If you’d like to get daily emails with ALL the latest money saving tips and recipes for inexpensive meals, you can sign up here for a FREE email subscription!

I read in your profile that you lived in the Dominican Republic for several years. Do you have any good Dominican recipes you can post? Thanks!

Erin, your recipes are delicious and save me money–both at the grocery store and after I leave the grocery store–no more running out to spend $15-$25 (on the conservative side) at the local pizza place. I can’t thank you enough for this great blog!

Thank you for your site. I’m always looking for tips/ways to stretch my grocery $. My hours at work have been cut and the main reason I work is to pay for our weekly groceries. I enjoy feeding my family of 6 home-cooked meals/cookies/desserts, etc…I’ll be more than willing to share my ideas/recipes as well!

Just saw you on Rachael Ray, Erin and came to your website also. Whether we are OK financially or not, I have always had a ‘thing’ about saving money wherever I can, especially on groceries and shopping consignment shops.
I love your website and have introduced you and it to a Facebook Recipe group I belong to, so you will probably see a lot of new members here as the result of it, Rachael & your other media.
I have 1 question: I noticed in the video on Rachael, 1) you said you only spend about 30 min. a week to save $60-80..I have done coupons for yrs & it takes me an afternoon….what is your secret?, and 2) What type of binder do you collect your coupons in? The slots looked smaller than photo albums..was it a baseball card collection album, or something similar? How do you organize your coupons/keep up with the expiration dates? Thx.

Sorry……I asked SEVERAL questions, not just one. I started out with one, then as I was typing, several more came to mind!!! Hope you are able to answer all of them as others will want to know also. Thanks, Erin!!

Saw you on Rachael Ray this morning, didn’t have time to check out your site until now, busy all day. Can’t wait to try out your tips and start saving more money on my grocery bill. Years ago, I used to plan out all of my meals for the month and saved a lot of money that way, but I got out of the habit of doing so and now I have to re-learn how to do this so I can start saving again. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us, Can’t wait to start over.
Thanks again, Sandi

I live with my daughter her husband and son now. I worked several years as the manager of the local school cafeteria. The kids had terrible eating habits and I am so happy that you are teaching your kids good eating habits. I’m looking forward to your recipes.

I am a new reader–thanks to the Rachael Ray Show. Congratulations on that by the way! I am new to the whole idea of a budget and trying to make more out of less. Recently I went from being a full time employee to part time, working just a few hours a week, in order to homeschool our daughter, who has had a terrible time with her asthma and numerous other illnesses this year. And now of course our household income has decreased significantly.I absolutely love the idea of your site and plan to incorporate some of your recipe ideas into our meal plan I know on the RR show you mentioned your weekly food budget, and my question for you is do you include your cleaning and beauty supplies (ex. laundry soap, dish soap, shampoo, etc.) in that budget, or do you have a seperate one for such things?

Thanks and I look forward to exploring more of your site

Erin April 24, 2009 at 7:44 pm

Yes. Everything but diapers go into the budget. On occasion I can get the diapers in!

I only caught a snippet of your segment on the Rachael Ray show and I bookmarked your website to check out later. I have so many budget/savings websites bookmarked that it truly is overwhelming. For me, it defeats the purpose because I don’t even know where to start or how to use them to their fullest potential. After spending about an hour purusing your website, I’m finding myself excited and hopeful! This looks like such a user-friendly budget site and I can’t wait to get started!! Thanks for devoting your time. You are helping so many people.
Good luck with your pregnancy! :)
