Saving Money on Exercise-New Year, New You

by Dana S on January 17, 2012

A  New Years goal for many is to be more physical active. Being more active can help with losing that baby weight, dealing with the everyday stress of parenting as well as blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol levels. However, the start up costs can inhibit some from getting started. Here are tips on how to save so that you can move more:

  1. Check out at home options. Adding an expensive monthly gym membership is not the only option to moving more. Take inventory of the equipment that you currently have. Can you still use that old stationary bike that is currently being used as a drying rack? Weights? Home programs on DVD? If the thought of using your old exercise equipment sucks the excitement out of exercise, consider selling it on Craigslist to fund your new exercise options. Other low cost options for home are walking (consider asking a neighbor to go with), running and home exercise programs on DVD that are borrowed from the library.
  2. Buy used. Consider buying home exercise equipment used. Our family was able to score a Schwinn stationary bike and treadmill for only $25 at a garage sale a few years back. We also bought the 90x program that new in the box off of Craigslist for 50% off.  The best prices on exercise equipment tend to be on Craigslist, resale stores like Goodwill and garage sales. Another great item to snag at resale stores is workout clothing. Stick with new shoes, however, as the supports on running shoes wear out after 500 miles.

What are your favorite ways to save on exercise?

I have compiled a great in-home workout library and only workout at home or run. NO gym memberships for me. I’m a Coach with Beachbody (P90X, Turbo Jam, etc.), and enjoy doing programs in the comfort of my home with a GREAT accountability and support system. After years, of gyms,(which I would stop visiting), home exercise equipment (which I would sell), and every excuse under the sun, THIS worked for me. You can see my before and after pictures on the Fit With Jo tab on my blog. Thanks for this post!

You can try the Lemonade Weight Loss Diet. Is a 14 Day Diet along with a Meal Plan and Exercise Program. It is a supplement that helps you csaenle, get rid of toxins, and lose weight. All ingredients are natural. The original Lemonade Diet or Master Cleanse was developed over 60 years ago. It is a mixture of fresh squeezed lemons, cayenne pepper, maple syrup and distilled water. People on the Master Cleanse can only drink this formula. They are not allowed to eat any food and must fast during the entire csaenle. We took the original ingredients and put them into a revolutionary new pill; and with the meal plan and exercise program you are able to eat and lose weight. Lemons are a wonderful natural detoxifier that have been used for hundreds of years and help the liver and kidneys detoxify. Cayenne pepper is like a roto-router for your cells. It can help digestion, and helps clear out the bowels. Maple syrup is loaded with natural occurring minerals and B vitamins. It’s full of energy and nutrients. Improved overall health is one of the most significant benefits of colon detoxification/cleansing. By removing the toxins that have built up over time, colon cleansing allows the digestive system to function more efficiently. More nutrients are absorbed from food, and toxins are flushed out of the colon. This can improve the health of the immune system and the entire body. Additional benefits can include: significant weight loss, increased energy level, clearer skin, improved concentration and mental clarity, better absorption of vitamins and minerals from food, feel healthier. In addition to weight loss, one other important thing you should expect is enhanced elimination.Furthermore, you should be aware that as our bodies detoxify, it is common to experience “detoxification symptoms”. These symptoms may include temporary gastrointestinal upset, gas, headache and a general sick feeling. If you experience any or all of these symptoms don’t be alarmed. It is just the normal process associated with your body’s ridding itself of toxins, and it is only temporary—generally you’ll feel better after a few days. You can expect to lose 5, 10, up to 17 pounds in 14 days guaranteed, by taking the product and following our meal plan and exercise program. We recommend using the Lemonade Weight Loss Diet for 14 days every two months. You can take this for the rest of your life for a healthier and leaner you.

I do p90X and other home workout programs in my den barefoot, which saves money on shoes and is also just a better option for me all around (determined after much research).

If you have a big enough space in your house, there are some great workouts that can be done at home with very little equipment on bodyrock.tv and fitnessita.com. I still go to the gym most days, but sometimes it is impossible (or unappealing!) and staying at home is a better option.

Skipping with a rope is also a fave, as is using the personal training programs you can get for the Wii or the Xbox Kinect.

If you’re in the market for a treadmill or other exercise equipment and live near a large-ish city area, Sears Outlet stores have great deals on stuff that were floor models but work great and are still under Sears warranty. We just got a $1300 Nordic Trak treadmill with all the bells and whistles for $500! You might even try other local appliance stores to see if they’re getting rid of floor models.
