After years of using essential oils, I’m finally talking about them “publicly” online! I’ve never shared that I’ve used them for getting rid of fleas on poor Cody when he got them from a local dog ‘hotel,’ that I slather them on the boys feet during the winter months, and that I use my own special ‘oily combo’ when I wash my face everyday.
The reason I am finally sharing about them now is I’ve discovered that when you COOK WITH THEM, they completely transform the experience of preparing and serving a meal. And I love feeding my family, and now I’m super stoked to teach you how to cook with oils!
I also want you to know that you don’t have to be a hippy to use oils. (I am totally not a hippy, but I am into fitness and wellness and really appreciate the impact that oils can have on your wellness!)
I want to encourage you to swap out herbs and spices for little bottles of oil in your pantry….because holy-delicious!
Introducing…RECIPES WITH ESSENTIAL OILS. Our newest online ‘baby’ is being born today…I am thrilled to be partnered with Jenn & Beth on this mission to help others discover the powerful effects that essential oils can have on your life.
In addition, I want to assure you that nothing will change here on $5 Dinners. I will continue to share budget-friendly recipes and meal plans here every week! I’ll just be sharing a few oily recipes each month over on the new website. 🙂
And lastly, because I know you’re wondering. Aren’t oils crazy expensive and how does that work with budget cooking?
Yes, some of the oils are expensive…but they aren’t all. In fact, many of the cooking oils are really inexpensive and in the long term, very cost effective. I have plans to do a more extensive price comparison breakdown, but here’s a quick example of what I think is one of the more versatile cooking oils.
- Lemon Essential Oil ~ 15 mL bottle costs $11.75 (wholesale price)
This bottle might last you for years in your pantry when stored properly and used regularly when cooking and baking. (It won’t last years, if you’re like me and add lemon EO to your water every day!) I’ve had my lemon EO for a few months now and it’s still going strong even though I use it daily in my water and a couple times a week when cooking and baking!
A single drop goes a long way, as it’s packed with concentrated flavor!
If you were to add up all the lemons that you need to create a 15 mL bottle of lemon EO drops, it would be 75 lemons! That’s WAY MORE than $11.75! There is an initial investment with long term savings potential, if you know you’ll be using the oils often in cooking and other parts of your daily routine!
