Kroger Shopping Trip – March 22

by Erin, The $5 Dinner Mom on March 23, 2010

Shopping with the $5 Dinner Mom

I broke one of my rules.

I took ALL THREE kids to the grocery store with me.

And now I remember why it is a rule. A RULE.

Rules are not meant to be broken for a reason.  Breaking (even self-imposed) rules bring consequences.  This time in the form of exhaustion.

I have no energy left.  I feel as though all life has been sucked from my bones. It might be days before I recover from my own disobedience.

So I’ll leave you with a brief summary. And a photo.

(I guess I had just enough energy left to take the photo. Then put away the food. It was after that when I collapsed on the couch.)

Kroger

You are funny:) I sometimes take the kids, sometimes not. They are pretty good at the store (4 and 1).

However-one I time I LIKE to go by myself is Harris Teeter Triples. I they start tomorrow here and I am already working on my list and heading to the store BEFORE Daddy goes to work! It is serious business!!!

I love Kroger’s Mega Events! Good job, you saved a lot, we went last week and I’m thinking about hitting it up again to grab a few more freebies this week. Last week we got free pasta, canned tomatoes, soap and cleaning sponges, I also grabbed some apple juice and soda. I plan on going back to get more free pasta, free Vitamin Water and a free bag of cat litter because I got some freebie coupons in the mail yesterday! :)

ha,ha,ha – I’ve been there!!! I have grocery shopped with all three two times…both times were very painful and I returned home feeling like I had ran a marathon and was mentally exhausted. Not to mention the many times I was stopped by people commenting on my three under four or wanting to take a peek at the baby. LOL, if they only knew the time restriction I am on and how I need to get in and out FAST!

I’m very impressed with your shopping abilities (along with 3 kiddos!!) I’m about to have #2 and worried how I will juggle a newborn at the store and a 20 month old!! Where is there even room for both in the cart??? ha.

I do have a question- does anybody know on these mega event sales if the sale is buy 8 items get $4 off, can you buy say 16 items at once and get $8 off or do you need to do them in separate trips? Just curious!

Thanks for such a great blog and cookbook – I ordered it a few weeks ago and everything has been fantastic!

@Jessica in KS,

Jessica, There is no limit on this particular Mega Event. I bought 40 items this past trip and got $20 off my order. No need for separate transactions.

As for the shopping, the big boys snuggle up in the “car carts” and the baby rides in the sling. Makes for an amazing workout ;)

Well, I don’t have such luck at Kroger. The meat goes bad within a day; no selection of produce at all; and everything has to be carefully looked at for expiration dates! Perhaps it’s just our area. Sounds like you all like them. We used to have three chains to choose from so the competition kept them hopping. Now it’s just Kroger and it’s like they stopped trying in our area. (SE Michigan) I only go there now if it’s a really good deal or i have a headache and can’t go as far to the big box store. – AMF

Erin,

How many do you normally take to the store? And, when do you go?

I love to hear about your shopping trips and the deals. Thanks for posting them even if you are exhausted.

@Katie,

I usually go with 1 or 2 on Mondays. Ideally with none. But that doesn’t always work out!

I did my Kroger trip yesterday and was pleased. I got 5 nights of meals and breakfasts for the week @ $47!!! My juice wasn’t as cheap though. I paid $1.19 – not sure where I went wrong there.

@Sandra,

The prices in Mega Events vary slightly by region Sandra. I was in Columbus, OH, last weekend and the prices were a bit different than my stores! $1.19 is still a great price!!!

I hear ya! I have three kiddos (4, 2, and 6 months) and it is definitely easier to leave them home, although I’m getting pretty good at juggling with them all there. I shop at Kroger too, and your trips look very similar to mine! I love the Mega events!

Whew! I remember those days. I’d strategically go at lunchtime with my three when they were tiny, and have them eat continuously while I shopped. (Doled out the food very slowly–is that inhumane?) It was the only approach that I found that worked for us. Now, my 15 year old DD helps with the couponing. :) Hope you get a long rest before you have to do that again!

Do the coupons that you add to your Kroger’s card tthe same as manuf. coupons or can you also use a paper coupon with the uploaded ones..? I’m a little confused..
Won free O.M. Hotdogs in the Hoops game YEA! Almost free lunch for the grandkids next week!

@Rhonda Hall,

Paper coupons and e-coupons are both manufacturer’s coupons and are not meant to be used together on the same item. If you have 1 paper coupon and 1 e-coupons for the same product and buy 2 of said product, that is OK.
