Chinese takeout is delicious, but because of all of the added MSG and the ridiculously high cost, I seldom order it anymore. Most typical Chinese dishes are actually very easy and inexpensive to make, they just need the right seasoning to make them taste good. I have been able to replicate all of my favorite dishes in my own kitchen with a simple seasoning mix for each. This weekend I tried a new one!

This recipe for Homemade Chicken Chow Mein Mix tastes just like restaurant chicken chow mein, but it’s very cheap to make and much healthier. You can add more vegetables and less meat to cut costs, it’s very flexible. My family loved it, and ate every bite.

Chicken Chow Mein with Homemade Seasoning Mix

Yield – 4 servings

Ingredients

Chow Mein Seasoning Mix (single use)

  • 1 tablespoon corn starch
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon nutritional yeast
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon ginger powder


Remaining Ingredients

  • 1 pound boneless chicken cut into thin strips
  • 2 stalks of celery, chopped
  • 1 carrot, peeled and chopped
  • 1 onion chopped
  • 2 cups bean sprouts
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • ¾ cup cold water
  • Cooked noodles
  • Oil for stir frying

Directions

  • In a large wok stir fry the chicken in oil on medium high heat until chicken is cooked.
  • Stir in onion, carrot and celery and continue cooking for a few minutes.
  • Combine mix, soy sauce and water and stir well, then add to the wok and stir.
  • Add in bean sprouts and cook for one more minute.

  • Serve over cooked noodles.

Note: Nutritional yeast (brewer’s yeast) is sold in all bulk food and health food stores. It looks like yellow flakes of fish food and adds flavor (and B vitamins) to savory dishes. You can omit it if you can’t find it, but it really enhances the dish and makes it taste like real take out.
