CLOSED! $250 Grocery Store Gift Card Giveaway

by Erin, The $5 Dinner Mom on August 22, 2009

Well, which grocery store?

That’s for you to decide!!!

Up until recently, I was not a fan of canned foods! Not until this online briefing I attended sponsored by the Canned Food Alliance. Food expert Roberta Duyff shared about the nutritional and cost benefits of canned foods. I chimed in the chat and asked about sodium content and sugar/syrup that can be found in many canned food products. She shared that the “no salt added” and “in pineapple juice” labelled canned foods offer the same nutritional content as the fresh counterparts.

Although I prefer fresh fruits and vegetables, I am no longer opposed to buying canned foods that have no added salt or are stored in fruit juice (not syrup)! So this winter, when great fresh produce is sparse, more canned foods will be showing up on my grocery receipt!

The Canned Food Alliance wants to help families get through this difficult time by equipping shoppers and cooks with the tools needed to prepare healthy meals “at home.” They hope that by teaching others about kitchen organization, meal planning basics, at home cooking skills and food storage practices, they can feed their family healthy meals, without breaking the bank!

They have created a website, www.mealtime.org, where you can find all the tips, tricks and tools to organize your kitchen, plan and cook your meals at home, and store your food!

So after I was sold on the canned food concept, the folks at the Canned Food Alliance challenged me…and YOU…

To a Pantry Makeover!!!

The $250 gift card (to the grocery store of your choice) is to makeover your pantry!

(Still with me?)

I’ll give you a peek about what they mean by pantry makeover!  They were generous enough to send me a $100 gift card to the store of my choice to do a pantry makeover at my house, too!  And what fun I had doing it! (Remember, TOTAL Type-A here!)

I went to Kroger and bought a few organizational tools (a few lazy susans, a few large containers, a drawer organizer), as well as a slew of “no salt added” and “in fruit juice” cans!  Of course, I did use coupons and did choose the sale priced products to stretch that $100 as far as I could!!!

Below is the transformation that occurred in my kitchen and pantry last weekend…

So now that I’ve bared my cupboards and stockpile to you all…I hope you can see the transformation from “ugh” to “sigh”.  My previously unorganized and unsightly cupboards are now clean, organized and much more functional than they were.  I really do feel better about life when my kitchen is organized!

Please note: This kitchen and pantry makevoer and reorganization project spurred me on to reorganize and purge the rest of the house.  The Hubs did ask if I was “nesting” (far TOO EARLY for that), to which I replied…”After cleaning out the kitchen, I can’t stand to have all this “stuff” in the house.”  So I purged.  I donated.  I threw away.  So beware.  A kitchen and pantry makeover COULD turn into a whole house reorganization event!  This all happened last weekend…and I’m still tired from it!

Back to the giveaway…Because this is a high dollar value giveaway, the entry stakes are a bit higher than the norm…but there are 10 chances to enter!!!  Plus an option for 2 bonus entries!

I want to see what you think you can do in your pantry with $250!

I live in a two bedroom tiny townhome so some plans I have are:

1. Get a hanging pot and pan rack from the ceiling
2. Use the top of the cabinets for storage of appliances that I don’t use as often
3. Use my freezer to store dry goods like nuts & rice to keep this fresh and clear up what little cabinet space I have
4. Get a hanging fruit basket for produce that doesn’t need refridgeration.
5. Get a magnetic knife strip to hold my knifes

By getting “stuff” off of the counters and out of the cabinets, there is way more room for important stuff, like FOOD!

Thanks for entering me in the contest!

I found a recipe at mealtime.org that includes black beans, which I love and usually buy canned that I am going to try out: http://www.mealtime.org/recipe_details.aspx?id=2066&query=black+beans&page=0&sortexp=Title&sortdir=0

1. Storage containers for pantry & cabinets!
2. Space savers to maximize the vertical space on each pantry shelf.
3. A stockpile of canned organics, especially beans and fruits.
4. Drawer dividers/organizers. My drawers are a wreck!
5. Good-quality storage containers for refrigerated items– the kind that don’t stain!

#1 I would like an organizer for our Teflon coated pans so they don’t get scratched.
#2 We need a spice rack.
#3 I would like to get the loose items together (packages, mixes, and the like) instead of them being strewn about wherever, like they are now
#4 I would like a place to store all of the lids so we can actually find one when we need it for storage containers
#5 I would like to get rid of the old baking pans that are ugling up the cupboard and put some new ones in there

I would purchase baking pans, an extra silverwear tray for kitchen utensils (love your before/after pic), and a tupperware box for lids! I would also like some of those dandy see-through containers for snacks. Thank you!

Thank you.

I’d like to makeover my pantry because…
a. I need more bulk containers for dry goods.
b. I need to find more space.
c. I need drawer organizers.
d. I need to build up my canned food supply.
e. I need more herbs and spices.

oh my word Erin! what a great giveaway

how would i reorganize my pantry…
1, I need a utensil organizer in my utensil drawer it’s a mess
2. My spices are all out of whack. I can never find them all when i need them.
3. I need to do a general overhaul on my stock pile. My canned in juice and no salt stuff is way low. I wouldn’t mind adding some organic canned foods in too.
4. My freezer is sadly bare. It needs more meat and baskets to keep it all organized in.
5. And lastly, while it’s too early for me to be nesting at 9 weeks gestation, Winning would provide me with some much needed motivation to get myself re-organized in my kitchen/pantry.

Ohhh, this will be fun! Five way to make over my kitchen/pantry.

1. I would clean out and organize my “bowl” cabinet. Ick! Bowls are shoved in there, I can never find the right lid, things fall out when I try to get one bowl…it’s not pretty.
2. I would get more storage shelves for my stockpile stuff. Right now it’s all shoved in an extra cabinet…not working for me!
3. I would set up a new area for medications…for some reason they always seem to migrate to my kitchen cabinets. NO, no, no!!
4. I would also set up an area for alcohol that is out of the kitchen. Right now it’s stored in the cabinet above the fridge and I feel that space is very unused…it could be used for a lot better things.
5. I would buy some new tupperware/rubbermaid containers, because I can’t find lids, or they are just gross.

THANKS!

I would love to makeover my pantry, I would buy more organizational stuff, as well as containers to hold stuff like chips & cereal, I would also add to my stock of food, as well as stock up on all the basics and buy more fresh fruit and veggies.

Organizers:
1- Use drawer dividers
2- Get a rotating spice rack
3- Nest bowls and storage containers
4- Put infrequently used items in a box on a top shelf. I have pizza cutters, melon-ball makers, etc there.
5- Keep small, similar items in a large jar. I put dried peas, lentils, & beans (in their plastic bags) in 1 jar. Another has gelatin and pudding boxes.
I’d use the money to pay grocery bills.
Thanks for this offer.

Hello,

I am a single father and I just came across your website the other day.

I justmoved into a small apartment with a tiny tiny kitchen. I would like to do the following for a kitchen pantry makeover.

1. Right now I have several pots in my pantry that take up a lot of room. I would like to get a pot shelf/rack and put it above the stove.

2. I would also like to get a small kitchen cart because I have about a foot and a half of counter space. This would also serve as a place to put small appliances.

3. I would like to get a few lazy susanns for the spices I have in the cabinet above the sink. They are shoved in there and I often forget what I have. I believe in the last 6 months I have purchases paprika 3 times. haha

4. I would like to purchase containers with lids to store my son’s snacks. They are in various boxes that take up a lot of room.

5. I would like to purchase a metal rod to hang above the counter to place paper towels and a caddy to put extra kitchen utensils in to save space on the counter and in the drawers that I have.

Well, this is a giveaway I really need to win!
First of all I have a tiny apartment kitchen and limited cabinet space so number 1 I would definitely get space savers. Secondly, I need some kitchen tools. We don’t have a pizza cutter or a decent spatula among several other kitchen utensils. Third I would get more canned goods for those days when I have no way to get to the store or time for a big meal. The forth thing is a spice rack and spices to fill it with (my current spice situation is lame!). The fifth thing is I desperately need new storage containers. Mine are stained and warped, lidless and disorganized. That is certainly where I’d start.

Sarah Fitzgerald August 28, 2009 at 6:02 pm

I want to stock up on my favorite canned goods. I need a wire fruit/vegetable hanging basket cause right now I have apples and bananas all over my counter and I desperately need a bigger spice rack. Mine is tiny and holds less than 1/2 my spices.

I loved this idea! My kids would totally eat this!
For a refreshing, healthy snack recipe for kids, take an undrained 16-ounce can of fruit in heavy syrup and an 8-ounce container of fruit-flavored low-fat yogurt and blend until smooth in a food processor. Pour into paper cups or molds. Once partially frozen, insert sticks into each and freeze for eight hours.

Wow! $250 would rock my pantry’s world! (My poor, neglected pantry.) I’ve got big dreams for it though…

1. First, I’d clear it of all things non-food (painting supplies, tools, hardware, cleaning stuff, and who knows what else that’s lurking in the shadows!)

2. Next, I’d make some cardboard can dispensers for the stockpile of cans I’d buy with the money.

3. Then the spending would begin! My goal is to build up a year’s worth of food storage. This money would help me to really stock up a nice amount of food. I’d buy beans, rice, wheat berries, sugar, and lots of canned veggies.

4. I’d get more white buckets from the grocery store bakery to store the food in, and organize the buckets on my shelves.

5. And lastly, I’d get hubby to build a few more shelves in the pantry to give me even more room!

A little wiping down and cleaning up and it would be HEAVENLY!

Thanks for the chance to win! (I never win anything… but you never know!)

Oh my. There are lots of things I need to organize my pantry.

I have a canned good organizer, but everything is mixed up. I am low on some things so other things are encroaching.
I need to organize my chips and snacks better, they are jumbled all over a shelf and fall when you try to get one.
I need a better way to store things in my two storage areas, the way they are now, it is hard to maintain proper rotation.
I can’t find a thing in my spice cabinet, I think tiered storage would help.
I need a better way to store flour, sugar, brown sugar, powdered sugar and such.
