I just found your website today (Everyday Cheapskate subscriber). Perfect timing for my bi-weekly grocery shopping trip. I found alot of recipes that I think our family will love and should be pretty simple to whip together after all of us are home from work/school. I appreciate all you have done. This site is the best.

<a href="#comment-26441" rel="nofollow">@Kara</a>,
Just to let everyone know, I usually hit several stores' meat dept 's on Wed / Thurs because typically that's when they mark down the weekend cuts. Perfectly good meat and half the price! Ask your local butcher when he marks down the weekends deals. They're usually very nice about sharing that info! And be prepared to STOCK UP!

OMG ... so i am making this right now. I have it on the stove and simmering. I am thinking to myself looking at this large pot of stew thinking, "goodness, this is a lot of stew for one." Cut to me looking at the directions and it specifically states "double batch". So i have NO more room in freezer and have this yummy stew for an army. So it will be stew for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks !!!

Oh, i modified it a wee bit. I used one cup of brown rice and cut up one potato. I used red wine vinegar instead of white/rice ... i am sure it will be ok.

This sounds yummy...the crockpot makes it perfect for those days we have scouts and Taekwondo or even before the Friday night football game (heck toss it in a thermos and take it to the game on chilly nights).

Thanks for a great recipe...we love A-1.

<a href="#comment-26451" rel="nofollow">@Linda</a>,

I'd cut the liquid down a bit...half this recipe (cuz it won't fit even in a large crockpot)...and add the rice in towards the end because otherwise it will swell too much and get mushy!

Have you ever tried this in the crockpot? I'm trying to remember the rule of thumb for converting recipes to crockpot. I think it's to cut the liquid in half, but I'm not sure about that. We are busy with soccer and dance 3 nights a week until 6:00 or 6:30, so I'm thinking that my crockpot needs to start getting a workout now that the weather is cooler!

This looks so good! My 14-year-old son just informed me that he likes beef stew... after 14 years of refusing to touch anything that even remotely looks like stew or soup! I am definitely going to have to try this. Thanks for sharing.
