I am bound and determined to make Bubby’s birthday cake this year! His birthday is on Tuesday…and we are having a small gathering to celebrate!
I’m a wee bit nervous about making his cake this year.
It’s not that I haven’t had luck with cakes in the past.
I have.
The probelm is that he asked for a “Super Why!” theme to his birthday. And there are no “cake pans” with detailed instructions for making Super Why! cakes, like there are for Spiderman and other cartoons. There are no “decorations” or “party hats” in the Super Why! theme, as it is such a young show! We will have to make do…and hope for the best!
I WILL, however, make him the best cake that I can…and in order to do that…I turned to the mama with 6 kids who has made a few cakes in her days, Jessica from Life As Mom! She does a Birthday Cake Roundup a few times a year for others to show off their homemade birthday cakes…and there just so happens to be one later this week!
She has also put together an e-book about cakes…She explains in more detail about her Pretty. Cool. Cakes. E-book…

I’m no expert, believe me. I’m just a mom who likes to make cool cakes for her kids. When they told me that I couldn’t make them pie for their birthdays, I had to get creative. My basic formula is to take what interests my kids, find toys and candy to go with the theme and then create a scene on top of a cake. Think third grade diorama and make it edible. It’s pretty much what the bakery does, only
- My kids have a lot of creative license in choosing a theme. The sky’s the limit in terms of themes.
- The birthday child gets to keep an entertaining functioning toy rather than a useless, plastic cake topper.
- I don’t pay a small fortune to celebrate with a festive cake.
Still not convinced you can do it? Then buy this book! (or sign up for the giveaway!)
This 34-page book includes photographs step-by-step instructions of thirteen different birthday cakes. Each one is based on a theme chosen by real live kids infatuated with fantasy heroes and storybook characters, just like every other child. Each cake can easily be adapted to your own child’s interests if ours aren’t his favorite. The many ideas represented here range from Star Wars to the Rainforest to Fancy Nancy as well as a few that will please older children, college students, and adults. But the best part of this book is the encouragement and inspiration it imparts.
You will see that it really isn’t difficult to create a festive, fun, and frugal birthday cake to celebrate the milestones in your family’s lives.
Jessica has graciously offered to GIVE AWAY 5 e-books…1 each to 5 lucky winners…details below!
AND…stay tuned, as she’s got some great surprises up her sleeve for later in the week…and I’ll fill you in on Wednesday night when I post the winners!

I have yet to attempt a cake. I was all excited to for my 2nd sons’ 1st birthday in a month, but he has wheat allergies, so I have to get *really* creative!
I would love to win this ebook. I can save so much money by making my own birthday cakes for the kids! Thanks!
Well I’d love to win! I’ve got 2 little guys, ages 5 and 2 and 1 little gal, 4 months! Plenty of cake making for me in the years ahead.
I’d love to win!
I made a pretty cool farm cake once. Used a farmer, and a plastic horse and buggy-filled them with those candy pumpkins you can get around Halloween. Then I found watermelon looking gumbballs, and made a patch of those in the corner… but that’s not your theme at all.
Tried to do a pirate treasure cake once… ended up settling for cupcakes with a Nestle’s Treasures chocolate candy box on top.
Wish I had some good pointers for you, but I don’t. I need help too!
Last year I made two cakes for my daugther’s 3rd birthday. I made a princess crown using 2 round cakes (with a circular hole cut in the center) and upside-down sugar cones. I used LifeSavers for the “jewels.” From the leftover cake I made a castle and decorated it with candies and suckers. Not perfect by any means, but my daughter loved them!
I would love to win.. wooohoo
I would love to win. My son’s 5th birthday is coming up in August and would like to be able to do my own cake. Thanks

I have made quite a few different cakes for my kids’ birthdays. The most recent one I used fondant for the first time and cut out flowers to put on. I have also made a “Little Mermaid” cake as well as a “My Little Pony” cake…just to name a few. Can you tell I want to win this giveaway???
for my daughter’s first bithday party, I made her a tigger cake. I did have a pan to make it, but did change up the frosting. used a family recipe, and then did change some of the coloring, as I didn’t like how it was set up.
Then for the other kids birthdays, as we have 5 kids birthdays in a 3 week period, i made a carasouel horse cake, and then indiviudal cupcakes with their ages on them. So they each had a candle to blow out. For my husband’s birthday this week, I made 24 cupcakes. I have them in the shape of a chainsaw, and will frost them all together to look like a chainsaw. This is something i made up, and have been playing with for a few days to look right.
I would suggest, you can make cupcake, and then arrange them into the shape of an airplace and frost is like one of the super why airplanes that they travel in. Or make them into the shape of a head and deocorate as his favorite super why character.
I’d love to win! I have a 14 and 11, years old girls and 7,5,and 2 year old boys.
email friends
I have made hotwheel cakes, barbie cakes, polly pocket cakes, carosel cakes,a G cleft cake, cat cake, and many more. I also have many more years of making cakes and am open for new ideas as well.
I want to win! My sister is a professional cake baker and decorator and I’m always far inferior – I want some tips so I can learn to be a little closer to as good as she is!
I’ve tried making cakes before – I made a Veggie Tales cake for my daughter’s birthday a few years back and it turned out okay. Nothing spectacular, but okay.
I would love to win this book any tips would be helpful. I called around about getting a cake shaped like a dog bone for my fur-kids birthday but the cheapest one was $25 and it wouldn’t have fed all the guest we had coming. I could not pay that for a cake so I went with the normal cupcakes for their birthday and they were fine with that but it would have been nice to have some tips. I was scared to venture this myself as I am not very good with shapes even though a dog bone sounds easy. Thanks for the chance to win!!
I would love to win this book! Now that my kids are grown, I have more time for cooking and baking.
Many years ago I tried to make a Thomas Train cake, my then very young son was pleased, but I thought it was kind of pitiful.

I would love to win. I have two kiddos that are only 13 months apart. We have one big party for both in the middle month between their birthdays. This year they are requesting a princess cake and a pirate cake. Whew! This would be a great giveaway to win!

I subscribe to your blog in google reader.
I haven’t made a cake for my daughter yet, but I have made other cakes in the past. My aunt was a professional cake decorator and some tips she gave me were to use a glaze on the cake before you frost it to prevent getting cake bits in your frosting; run a fork across the top of your frosting from side to side and top to bottom to give the cake a neat texture; dip your knife in warm water to give the frosting a smooth look.
I would love to win this ebook.
A few years back I did make a couple of cakes for my kids. I made a batman cake, a Pooh bear cake, and a couple for friends. It’s fun
I posted a link on my blog.
I just started decorating cakes. This would be awesome!
I would love to have this book!

It’s funny how popular Superwhy is yet it’s hard to find much swag for it in general. I had to create my own Superwhy T-shirt on cafepress when I wanted to get one for my kids. Good luck with the cake!
We recently created a robot cake for my 3yo’s bday. It was a lot of fun and we used marshmallows for knobs, which the kids went crazy for.
I made a birthday cupcakes for my daughter’s 7th birthday. I used applesauce in lieu of the oil (thinking I was being a healthy mom) and it was awful for frosting a cake! The tops were crumbly and one of the moms even commented. Eek! I really could use all the help I can get on birthday cakes!
I would love to have this book! I’m currently taking a cake decorating class and I’m always looking for ideas.
