I am bound and determined to make Bubby’s birthday cake this year! His birthday is on Tuesday…and we are having a small gathering to celebrate!
I’m a wee bit nervous about making his cake this year.
It’s not that I haven’t had luck with cakes in the past.
I have.
The probelm is that he asked for a “Super Why!” theme to his birthday. And there are no “cake pans” with detailed instructions for making Super Why! cakes, like there are for Spiderman and other cartoons. There are no “decorations” or “party hats” in the Super Why! theme, as it is such a young show! We will have to make do…and hope for the best!
I WILL, however, make him the best cake that I can…and in order to do that…I turned to the mama with 6 kids who has made a few cakes in her days, Jessica from Life As Mom! She does a Birthday Cake Roundup a few times a year for others to show off their homemade birthday cakes…and there just so happens to be one later this week!
She has also put together an e-book about cakes…She explains in more detail about her Pretty. Cool. Cakes. E-book…

I’m no expert, believe me. I’m just a mom who likes to make cool cakes for her kids. When they told me that I couldn’t make them pie for their birthdays, I had to get creative. My basic formula is to take what interests my kids, find toys and candy to go with the theme and then create a scene on top of a cake. Think third grade diorama and make it edible. It’s pretty much what the bakery does, only
- My kids have a lot of creative license in choosing a theme. The sky’s the limit in terms of themes.
- The birthday child gets to keep an entertaining functioning toy rather than a useless, plastic cake topper.
- I don’t pay a small fortune to celebrate with a festive cake.
Still not convinced you can do it? Then buy this book! (or sign up for the giveaway!)
This 34-page book includes photographs step-by-step instructions of thirteen different birthday cakes. Each one is based on a theme chosen by real live kids infatuated with fantasy heroes and storybook characters, just like every other child. Each cake can easily be adapted to your own child’s interests if ours aren’t his favorite. The many ideas represented here range from Star Wars to the Rainforest to Fancy Nancy as well as a few that will please older children, college students, and adults. But the best part of this book is the encouragement and inspiration it imparts.
You will see that it really isn’t difficult to create a festive, fun, and frugal birthday cake to celebrate the milestones in your family’s lives.
Jessica has graciously offered to GIVE AWAY 5 e-books…1 each to 5 lucky winners…details below!
AND…stay tuned, as she’s got some great surprises up her sleeve for later in the week…and I’ll fill you in on Wednesday night when I post the winners!

I would love to win!
I want to win!! I have 3 kids under the age of 7 and make their cakes each birthday. This could come in handy for new ideas as they get older.
For DD 2nd b-day, I made a Mickey Mouse clubhouse cake. Instead of making the clubhouse out of frosting, I used fondant. It was super easy and everyone loved it! Even had someone ask me to make one for their little one’s bday.
I want to win! I have to bake a cake for my doctor’s birthday next week
I can’t even being to tell you how great this would be to win!!!!
i’ve made a thomas the tank engine cake (free handed), a pirate ship, scooby doo, high school musical, princess castle, knight castle, clowns, and dinosaurs plus many more that I can’t think of right now. I LOVE LOVE LOVE making cakes and the more I do, the better I get and the easier it becomes. Just keep going and it will get easier and even more fun than it is right now! I would love to win the Pretty. Cool. Cakes. E-book!!
I don’t have any kids but I try to take something goofy and fun that my husband likes and make him cute cakes on his birthday. This year I made him a 1up cake from Mario Bros. He loved it, made me feel good.
uh, never made a cake! i did make pumpkin muffins for my son’s first birthday which he ate a little bit of. my daughter’s first bday is in a few weeks and here is my plan (taken from a recent issue or Parents Mag). Cupcakes with white frosting, add sand (brown sugar) to frosting and a mini-umbrella as a decoration… this WAS my plan until it hit me tonight how many small ones will be at the party and sharp pointy objects are not probably a good idea! ugh! need an idea fast!
I absolutely want to win! I’m not so good with any dessert that’s not a muffin/cupcake and could really use the help.
Also, I subscribe to your blog in a RSS reader. And I just talked about your website in general with a good friend a few moments ago.
I would love this book!
I made white/pink topped cupcakes for my daughter’s first birthday. Not very creative, but I was determined to make them from scratch at home. I’d love to know how to make something special for next year and continue the “home-made” theme… although hopefully with a lot more creativity!
I would love to win!

I tweeted about the contest, yay
Also, I once made a cake in the shape of the coyote from the Roadrunner cartoon. It came out super neat. It was for my dad who was in love with that cartoon. (I don’t have any children, yet
Just tweeted about it!
I WANT to WIN!
I’ve forwarded the contest to my friends, added it to my blog and told all my co-workers about the contest and the great book of ideas.
Oh, and I made an Elmo cake for my son’s 2nd birthday – round cake, white frosting coverev in red sprinkles, colored jelly beans for eyes and nose and mouth! Not perfect but he loved it!
I ALWAYS make home-made cakes for my kids, ages 6 & 5. My best memories as a child were the amazing cakes my Mom made so I’m passing that along to my kids. I’ve made a three tierd castle for my daughters princess birthday, a horse for my son’s cowboys party, a fish, a clown carrosel (coppied from my second birthday cake 30 some years ago) and next I’m making a dolphin for my daughter’s 7th birthday. My sister and I love coming up with creative shapes and themes for the cakes.
I would to win this. Thanks!
I would love to win! I’m really starting to get into making my own cakes for our special occassions and this would help.
We made a round cake, put blue frosting all over it and then decorated the top with polly pockets. It looked like they were at the pool. We did it for my daughter’s outdoor water party.
I’m a subscriber in google reader.
My daughter wanted a rainbow and unicorn cake for her 5th birthday last week…I was at a loss. My solution was to make a rainbow out of rows of M&M’s and I put the small unicorn My Little Ponies on her cake and you would have thought I hung the moon by her reaction. It wasn’t as nice as I would have liked for it to be, but she loved it and that is what matters!
I want to win:)LOL
I want to win because I have two kids — 3 1/2 years and 3 1/2 months — and want to be the mom who makes awesome birthday cakes for their kids and all their friends are jealous
I just started getting into the homemade fun cakes a year ago, and now that I have two kids, I can’t wait to get into it more — and I could use some help!
I would love to win! I make cakes for my kids birthdays and just for fun and love to switch things up!

This year, I have made a rainbow cake, a skateboard cake and a Hello Kitty cake. My advice? Do a practice run!
I would love to win!!
I want to win!
I also subscribe to you in my google reader–and LOVE your recipes.
I’ve only had one birthday cake to make for my little girl so far–I bought a generic one from the store and put Hello Kitty toys on top. It was pretty low-key, but cute enough for a one-year-old. I’m sure I’ll learn more with this book. Thanks!
This would be great! I would absolutely put this to good use!
I emailed my friends that I know could benefit from this. I also posted it on my facebook! I will be posting it on my blog in the morning.
When my daughter was 3, I bought one of those Wilton Cake Pans and made a Blues Clues cake for her. Doing the icing with the star tip was so time consuming but the end result was well worth it!
This year, when my niece turned 14, I did a tie dye cake for her. The cake and the icing. It was fun and turned out great!
I want to win! I have a 5 year old daughter and a 3-year old son! I have never made a homemade birthday cake and would like to try! Thanks!
I would love to win. My 2 youngest have summer birthdays. I would love to get some new ideas for birthday cakes.
I’d love to win!
My mom has been doing cakes for 30 years, so she usually does that for each of the kids’ birthdays (I have 3 – 6 1/2, almost 5, and 2 1/2). I did make a two-tiered castle cake for my daughter’s Dora Princess party and a three-tiered skyscraper cake for my son’s Spider-man birthday. Tiered cakes are a pain, but can be really cool, just plan to use lots of icing and support material (straws, toothpicks, etc.) to hold it together. Anything you do will be great and your kids will love it, so don’t stress about it too much. How about doing a question mark cut from a sheet cake and a cupcake for the dot on the bottom? Have fun!
Just tweeted about it
