I am bound and determined to make Bubby’s birthday cake this year! His birthday is on Tuesday…and we are having a small gathering to celebrate!
I’m a wee bit nervous about making his cake this year.
It’s not that I haven’t had luck with cakes in the past.
I have.
The probelm is that he asked for a “Super Why!” theme to his birthday. And there are no “cake pans” with detailed instructions for making Super Why! cakes, like there are for Spiderman and other cartoons. There are no “decorations” or “party hats” in the Super Why! theme, as it is such a young show! We will have to make do…and hope for the best!
I WILL, however, make him the best cake that I can…and in order to do that…I turned to the mama with 6 kids who has made a few cakes in her days, Jessica from Life As Mom! She does a Birthday Cake Roundup a few times a year for others to show off their homemade birthday cakes…and there just so happens to be one later this week!
She has also put together an e-book about cakes…She explains in more detail about her Pretty. Cool. Cakes. E-book…

I’m no expert, believe me. I’m just a mom who likes to make cool cakes for her kids. When they told me that I couldn’t make them pie for their birthdays, I had to get creative. My basic formula is to take what interests my kids, find toys and candy to go with the theme and then create a scene on top of a cake. Think third grade diorama and make it edible. It’s pretty much what the bakery does, only
- My kids have a lot of creative license in choosing a theme. The sky’s the limit in terms of themes.
- The birthday child gets to keep an entertaining functioning toy rather than a useless, plastic cake topper.
- I don’t pay a small fortune to celebrate with a festive cake.
Still not convinced you can do it? Then buy this book! (or sign up for the giveaway!)
This 34-page book includes photographs step-by-step instructions of thirteen different birthday cakes. Each one is based on a theme chosen by real live kids infatuated with fantasy heroes and storybook characters, just like every other child. Each cake can easily be adapted to your own child’s interests if ours aren’t his favorite. The many ideas represented here range from Star Wars to the Rainforest to Fancy Nancy as well as a few that will please older children, college students, and adults. But the best part of this book is the encouragement and inspiration it imparts.
You will see that it really isn’t difficult to create a festive, fun, and frugal birthday cake to celebrate the milestones in your family’s lives.
Jessica has graciously offered to GIVE AWAY 5 e-books…1 each to 5 lucky winners…details below!
AND…stay tuned, as she’s got some great surprises up her sleeve for later in the week…and I’ll fill you in on Wednesday night when I post the winners!

Oh, let’s see…I have five children, so I have made many cakes for birthdays. They aren’t alwasy beautiful, but they are always from Mama’s heart, so my babies love them. I have made:
-bouncey slide (think pump it up party place)
) Maybe you could mold a little Super Why and friends!
-Winnie the pooh
-curious george
-pink palace
-bowling pins
-Ern. E. Elephant (from the AWANA program)
-Dora
-Bob the Builder
-Straw, Sunhat
-Pirates
-Froggy
-Skateboard
-artists’ pallate
(all are pictured on fb)
Like I said, not all gorgeous, but fromm the heart. Here is a link I found to make homemade fondant. It is easy, cheap and tastes much better than the wilton stuff. I use it to mold everything from a frog to a graduate
http://whatscookingamerica.net/PegW/Fondant.htm The ingredients cost less than $5!!!!

Since my son has food allergies, I have no choice but to make his birthday cake every year! So far I’ve made an Elmo cake, a Thomas the Train cake, a Little Einsteins cake, a Spongebob cake and this year was the big one…the lava scene from Star Wars Episode III. I’m running out of ideas…the e-book would definitely inspire me!!!

My son (now 6) wanted a Chinese-themed birthday party last year so I made a Chinese dragon cake for him. I found the directions for a dragon cake on the internet (no special pan was needed) and decorated it with lots of colors to make it look like a festive Chinese dragon. For my 2 year old’s birthday, I made her a monkey cake (similar to the one at marthastewart.com) and monkey cupcakes. I just love making their cakes. Good luck with Super Why – I am sure you will make a great cake!

This year I made a “Dragon Tales” themed cake for my daughter’s bday. It was pretty simple in that it was kind of a layer cake with different colored icing as the layers and on top, but I am definately interested in learning how to make more detailed cakes.

I was looking to make a bert and ernie cake for my son’s first birthday. The same as my mom made me when I was a little one. I couldn’t find the mold so I resorted to a publix dinosaur cake. It was very cute but I would have really liked to have made one myself. Maybe next year.

I don’t have any kids, so I haven’t made them cakes yet, but I made my husband’s grandma my first shaped cake recently! I shaped it into a dog that was supposed to look like a toy poodle she used to have. http://beckisted2004.blogspot.com/2009/07/cake-and-fourth-of-july.html
I learned that on shaped cakes, “crumb coats” are very important! If I had to do it over again, I’d add a thin layer of white frosting to catch all of the crumbs, then the other frosting over that.

My kids are young so I haven’t made many cakes yet, but I do make their cakes every year. So far I’ve made a teddy bear, a beach cake with gummy sea life in the ocean, a bike cake (made the bike out of Twizzlers), and a Cars cake- my favorite so far. The cake was shaped like a one and frosted like a road. Then we put two cars on the “road”.
