Hamburgers with Sweet Potato Fries

by Erin, The $5 Dinner Mom on February 25, 2009

Ingredients
4 burger patties ($2.25)
4 buns ($.58) Boys will eat without bun!
Condiments ($.25)
4 sweet potatoes ($1.34)
1-2 tsp canola oil ($.05)
Dash of cinnamon ($.01)
Salt
1 box of steamed green beans ($.75)

Directions
1. Grill burgers. (Y’all, I’m desperate for spring!!! I refused, yes refused, to wear a coat this morning to therapy with the boys. I want coat season to be over!!!)
2. Peel sweet potatoes. Cut in half. Slice sweet potatoes into fry shape. The thinner the slices, the faster they will cook. Toss all sweet potato slices in large bowl with oil, salt and a dash or two of cinnamon.
3. Lay sweet potato slices out on greased baking sheet. Bake at 350 for 25-30 minutes. Turn once about half way through the baking. If you prefer, crispier fries, let them bake a little longer, but watch them so they don’t burn on the edges!
4. Steam green beans as directed on package.
5. Serve burgers with bun and favorite condiments and a side of sweet potato fries and green beans.

Cost $5.23

we have found that preheating the pan for the fries helps to make them nice and crispy. just take out,
put oil on and then toss potatoes.

If you love sweet potato fries you have to try turnip french fries. Equally yummy, and a good source of calcium.

Yum! I always eat my burgers without buns, too- just like your boys. :)

I’ve found that my little George Foreman grill works on those chilly “non-barbecue” days. I’ve really been eyeing those summer grilling recipes lately, too!

Blessings,
Michele :)

This sounds good! But, you do realize you’re in Ohio, right? I’m betting on at least 1 more measurable snow before Easter!

Are these prices serious. 4 sweet potatoes where I live run 3.25, one pound of meat is a minimum 5.99 per pound.

Happy-
Yes these prices are serious. I live in the midwest where food costs less than say NYC or Cali. I buy bread/buns when it’s less than $1/package, so 4 buns would be $.50 or less (if I have a coupon!). Sweet potatoes are often on sale for $.59/lb – $.79/lb around here.

You can take 1 lb. of ground beef (brown it in skillet)once cooked add brown gravy packets (I like 2 packets) onion, minced garlic, add desired amounts of seasoning of allspice, garlic salt & pepper, onion,. Let simmer with sliced canned potatoes (use broth from potatoes for your 1 cup of water for gravy. You may need to add some additional water. Let sit in fridge for a night eat next day after ingredients have marinated with one another and this is delicious. My son’s favorite meal. Don’t have actually cost, but I know it’s cheap because we get our beef for free. Venison!!
